Hello!! I am new here..my greetings to everyone. I feel you *can* teach an old dog new tricks ;-) I've been veggie for over 35 years for ethical reasons only. I won't even pretend that I was interested in the health aspects of it. But I really need to become interested in the health part of a vegan diet.
I remember back when there was no 'Burger King Veggie Burger', nor packaged meat substitutes nor any real veggie assistance of any kind! I remember my parents telling me, when I was around 14, basically, that if I didn't eat meat I could die! Things have changed A LOT!! LOL!! I'm in NY now, where are you? -Namaste

Oh, and keep up the good work everyone... many of you are trailblazers, and those of you who are new to veg*nism are doing a good job of dispelling that 'you can't teach old dogs new tricks' myth :-)

To all you vegan wannabes: I just came back from a trip to CA and did the "McDougall program for Dynamic Health". I dragged my meat-eating husband with me and he is now on a vegan diet! Just listening to the success stories, the dangers of foods in our diet, and cooking tips has really helped me in my plight. I didn't realize how much fat I was putting in and on my food, also how much soy isolate I was consuming. Big change for me and my ways. Just because I was eating vegan/vegetarian, doesn't mean there were no dangers in those foods. We have to be careful with everything. I now have no arthritis pain and I have much more energy. Keep your fingers crossed for my husband as he is still waiting for improvment in his cholesterol and diabetes.

Crystal, I have been vegetarian most my life now and I have never done the wheat meat..so you are ahead of me there. I will make in blender lentil burgers and they are good. I dont think lentils are gmo yet. Dont forget cookbooks. My oldies were Diet for a Small Planet, Recipies for a Small Planet when I did dairy. Now you can substitute almond milk and I use yeast like a cheese spread. Luckily, today there are more books. Peta has a great college vegan cookbook and more cookbooks on their site. Also PCRM on net has wonderful-4 star-vegan recipies on their site for ethical medicine.

Much thanks to Brian. I loved your links-I even watched Monsantos all 10 Youtub videos about their lies with the GMO's. Very informative. I am aware of Monsanto destroying many small farms with forcing famers out of business tactics. Sad day in USA, sadder folks in world when 1 co. owns our major food crops. We will bow every knee to that new god. They are doing it without firing a single bullet! All links were informative-stayed up to 4AM. But ok I am lonely vegan in Tampa!

I've been an organic eater now for about 38 years, beginning with a health improvement benefit focus, and optimum nutrition. only recently I've developed my interest in the dangers perhaps posed by commercial production using toxic materials. however, under the NOS, product labels that say 'made with organic such and such' can contain up to 30% non-organic ingredients. only products with the USDA organic seal have 95-100% (two categories) organic ingredients.

the jury is still very much out on any possible side effects from ingesting hexane. but it was alarning to read concentrations as high as 50 ppm were found in soy meal, when the FDA limits the amount of residue in hop extract and spice resins to 25 ppm.

as far as GMOs, some 90% of US soybean agriculture has derived from GM seed over the last 10 years.

and not to become the only finder of fact here, but apparently Edensoy is the first and currently only soymilk to be verified by the Non-GMO Project.l

Does this news mean that I am only safe eating Soy products made ONLY from

Organic Soy Beans. If so what does that leave me to eat! I am vegan now for more than 13 years. I just learned this month how to make Wheat Meat! Guess I will make my own bergers from that!

labeling of non-GMO products is voluntary, and no guarantee the product is organic. the USDA organic seal however, is probably the best guarantee a product is GMO free.

the non-GMO project has issued a seal with third party verification. here's a link to their site:
http://www.nongmoproject.org/

the Institute for Responsible Technology has a non-GMO shopping guide, and here are their links:
http://www.responsibletechnology.org/GMFree/Home/index.cfm
http://www.nongmoshoppingguide.com/SG/Home/index.cfm

I highly recommend the video by Jeffrey Smith @ Responsible Technology.

Great links-those I havent read. Did read specifically that Amys was personally asked and they do not use it or buy from someone. They do their soybeans "inhouse" for perfection. I am on the link and it mentions Wallmart, which unfortunately I have known before the warnings that just "organic" is a buzz word in the states for sales$$$ not reality of the product. Organic can really not be what we want it to be. Kinda sad. How long as Americans have we really been decieved? Lulled into safety? Well, that is another topic on some other site! I will keep reading and thanks. For now will stick to almond milk since I cant get exact info. Question?? Are WE (America) sure that Non-
GMO is organic?? Or are we guessing at that part of legislation? Dont know answer to that either. Thanks
