Hmm, always thought of myself as a hippy...and proud to be one too :)

Although hippie is etymologically correct, and gathers twice as many hits on google internationally, the split is closer to 50/50 on just UK sites.  I guess we're so use to spelling words differently from the Americans we never stop to think they might have got it right for once.

Is it 'hippy' or 'hippie', or are they interchangeable?! Hippy appears to be a variant, which do people prefer?

I had somone say this to me yesterday in my philosophy class WOW! you look like a hippy today! I dont why I thought that I had jeans, a thermol, a blazer and a little scarf thing but I still looked at them and said thanks sooo much. I get called a hippy alot and am pretty proud of it. I have always cared about the enviroment, am for animal rights, dont vax my kids( trust me I get the looks on that one,) I used to cloth diaper my children and not to mention I am a vegan. So I am proud to be a hippy!

I agree Annette, when people call me a hippie I just say Cheers lol, better than Chav lol or Conservative haha
But my handsome features and long hair just make people assume i'm a hippie anyway
