Corn is ridiculously subsidised in the USA which is the only reason why it's so cheap... The subsidisation encourages industrial agriculture practices (monocultures, excessive fertiliser/pesticide/herbicide use, soil depletion, erosion...) plus GM corn is prevalent in many countries - notably the USA - reinforcing farmers' dependency on chemical fertilisers etc despite dubious benefits and the issues mentioned previously. If you are going to buy corn, I suggest buying organic! It might be more expensive but the holistic cost is much lower than GM/conventionally grown corn when you take into consideration the value of ecosystems, biodiversity, soil fertility, pollution control etc.
