Meet Vegans and Vegetarians From Around The World
this friend of mine calls herself vegetarian but is actually pescatarian and i went to panera bread with her recently. she ordered the broccoli cheddar soup so i told her that it contained chicken stock and her response was shushing me and telling me not to ruin it for her. i don't know, maybe i shouldn't have even bothered since she's not vegetarian anyway. last time i checked though, chicken wasn't acceptable for pescatarians either. this same friend also knowingly eats foods with gelatin.
i suppose the point of this post[if one exists] is to say that i just don't understand the wishy-washy behavior. i mean, why even bother being pescatarian if you have no intention of avoiding foods with other animal products? not to mention, pescatarianism is generally idiotic and accomplishes next to nothing.

Comment by Hannah kaminsky on April 23, 2012 at 2:49pm Oh Btw- I like your font choice ;)
Comment by queen katy foxwillow on April 22, 2012 at 5:05pm i don't think this is part of a transition for my friend, she's been pescatarian the whole time i've known her: 10+ years. and she's being indifferent to things like gelatin and chicken stock, despite knowing about them.
Comment by Al Ⓥ Evens on April 22, 2012 at 4:41pm Some people go from meat eater to vegan in one step overnight.Others go gradually as they learn more about where fish, dairy eggs and gelatine come from and what their consumption does to their bodies. Hopefully these friends are going in the right direction better than those who carry on as indifferent meat eaters! I expect there are a lot of us on here that have gone through the so called wishy washey behaviour before becoming true vegans!
Comment by queen katy foxwillow on April 21, 2012 at 4:53pm not to worry, sadie. this blog was a boredom-induced rant anyway..
Comment by queen katy foxwillow on April 21, 2012 at 2:50pm calling yourself vegan for health reasons raises a whole different issue, but if they're eating eggs and dairy [even if rarely] these people are actually vegetarians anyway.
i don't care at all for the word "flexitarian", though it's certainly better than "meat-eating vegetarian"..since it's not a direct contradiction of terms. interesting article but only 3% of the US being veg strikes me as rather low. i suppose it does make sense for these sometime-vegetarians to be the ones interested in BK's veggie burger, i've known about it for years but never even considered eating it..i simply don't go to burger king.
Comment by Liz Lattimer on April 21, 2012 at 12:51am You should inform her that she's an omnivore if she's eating gelatin :)
Comment by queen katy foxwillow on April 21, 2012 at 12:41am yeah she knows for sure that she's actually pescatarian, i've been over it with her. i think she only says vegetarian because she thinks that most people don't know what "pescatarian" means. but it does still bother me and i correct her whenever i hear it.
i've tried talking to her before about the gelatin issue, didn't get very far. and i'm pretty sure that i'd get an argument whether i wanted one or not. she's a sweet girl but..VERY argumentative.
Comment by Liz Lattimer on April 21, 2012 at 12:25am Have you confronted her about this? It seems to me that she's claiming to be a vegetarian for little more than the attention it gets her. I can't imagine what she answers when she's asked why she's chosen to quit eating meat, and then how she explains the fish away as something less than a sentient being.
I actually work with a pescatarian who calls herself a vegetarian. It really annoys me. I mean, she or your friend could be the first "vegetarian" someone meets, and might create a negative perception of the ideology. I'm not saying you need to start an argument with your friend, but maybe ask her why she chooses to eat the way she does.
